What is the Status of Yaz Lawsuits?

Many people across the United States and even here in Tennessee know about the drug Yaz and its dangerous side effects. Beginning in 2012, the Yaz lawsuit cases include more than 10,000 injury cases that were filed in state and federal courts across the country for women that have had problems and injuries such as: heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder problems, and sudden death as a result of taking Yaz. All of the federal lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation so all federal cases filed throughout the country will be transferred to one judge for pre-trial proceedings.

Multidistrict litigation cases are similar to how a class action Yaz lawsuit would be handled; however, each claim remains an individual case. If the lawsuit is not resolved during pre-trial proceedings, then the case will go back to the federal district court where it was filed to await a trial. In October of 2010, a Case Management Order was started for federal multidistrict litigation holding three Yaz representative trials which will be used to decide how juries will respond to testimony and evidence that is to be heard and seen throughout all the Yaz cases.

Jim Higgins, founder of the Higgins Firm, is a seasoned personal injury attorney with deep roots in Nashville, Tennessee. A 4th generation Nashvillian, Jim carries on the legal legacy of his father, a judge for over 30 years. After graduating from the University of Memphis School of Law, Jim’s career began on the other side of the courtroom, defending insurance companies and learning their tactics for minimizing settlements. However, he soon realized his true calling was fighting for the rights of the injured, and for the past several years, he has exclusively represented plaintiffs in personal injury cases.

Since then, his dedication and skill have earned him membership in the prestigious Million Dollar Advocates Forum, an organization limited to attorneys who have secured million and multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for their clients. Licensed to practice in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia, Jim focuses on personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice, and workers’ compensation cases. His exceptional work has been recognized by his peers, earning him a spot on the Super Lawyers list from 2021 to 2024, a distinction awarded to only a select group of accomplished attorneys in each state.
