Tennessee women make decisions regarding their reproductive health every day. Do I use contraception? Should I use the pill, an IUD, shots or some other form? The family of one Nebraska woman claims the choice she made led to her death.

The survivors of Ann Thompkins have filed a suit with the state Attorney General claiming that the NuvaRing she was using caused a fatal blood clot. Damages have not been specified but her family is suing for actual costs relating to loss of wages, funeral expenses, wrongful death and punitive damages. Mark Weber, the Thomkins family’s attorney, says he expects that this suit, the first filed in Nebraska, will be joined with others in federal court in St. Louis.

Thomkins, a mother of two, was found dead by a friend of the family. She died 5 months after beginning use of the contraceptive. The suit claims that the makers of NuvaRing downplayed the possibility of dangerous side effects.
