Neocate Formula

Has your child experienced bone fractures or rickets due to low phosphate levels after taking Neocate Formula? If so, it may be in your best interest to consult a Neocate Formula lawyer from The Higgins Firm.

Neocate Formula Linked to Hypophosphatemia

A 2017 Yale University study has discovered a link between children and infants who have taken Neocate Formula as a food replacement, and suffered from hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels). This deficiency has been associated with:

  • Broken bones
  • Bone fractures
  • Rickets
  • Skeletal deformities and bone development issues
  • Muscle weakness
  • Excessive pain

The study observed 51 children whose primary (or only) food source was Neocate. It found that all of the children had low phosphate levels and 94% had rickets or broken bones. Most children improved after a taking supplemental phosphate or switching formulas. Neocate is given to children who are unable to consume dairy or soy products. A large number of these children also suffer from disabilities; such as, cerebral palsy, GERD, and short bowel syndrome. The researchers of the study have advised parents of children who consume Neocate to carefully monitor their mineral levels, and to discuss these concerns with a primary care physician. The makers of Neocate Formula, Nutricia, have advised something similar and are investigating the matter.

If your child has been injured because of low phosphate levels after consuming Neocate Formula, you should speak with a Neocate Formula lawyer to understand your legal options.

Hypophosphatemia Symptoms

Hypophosphatemia is a serious health condition marked by low phosphate levels. This can result in:

  • Breathing problems
  • Muscle weakness
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Fragile bones
  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Muscular and skeletal problems
Rickets Symptoms

Rickets causes weak and soft bones in infants and children. Symptoms of rickets may include:

  • Delayed growth
  • Leg, pelvis, and/or spinal pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Skeletal deformities

Although a lack of vitamin D is the predominant cause of rickets, hypophosphatemia can also cause the disorder. It can take a child several months to recover from rickets. Surgery may be required to correct certain issues, and some of the symptoms can cause permanent problems, including bone deformities.

Do I Have a Neocate Formula Lawsuit?

An experienced personal injury lawyer from The Higgins Firm can review your case to determine whether or not you may file a lawsuit against the maker of Neocate, Nutricia. In general, these lawsuits allege a manufacturing and/or marketing defect which refers to a failure to warn of a side effect. With regards to Neocate Formula, our law firms believes Nutricia failed to warn doctors and patients about the risk of developing dangerously low phosphate levels and rickets.
