The people who utilize these devices have an expectation that the product to work properly and safely. However, a number of people who have had hip replacements have come to realize that these products do not always work properly or safely. Rather, some of these hip replacement systems have caused further pain and even more surgeries to fix the underlying hip issues.

DePuy Hip Replacement System Recalled after Complications

DePuy Orthopedics, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has developed a large number of medical devices. However, specifically two of those devices have been linked to a number of complications. Both the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing systems were among the recalls by DePuy. The company recalled an estimated 93,000 implants.

After the recall in August 2010, individuals have filed many lawsuits to cover their pain and suffering stemming from hip replacement surgery. In addition, individuals are seeking compensation for required further surgery to correct the trouble with their implants. Although DePuy Orthopedics, Inc. previously stopped using these products shortly after they were put on the market, the company stated that it was not due to failures or defects with the implants.

These devices were well-liked by and often recommended to younger people because they were thought to be more secure and had less of a chance of moving around or becoming dislodged after they were put in. Several grievances about these devices were made starting in 2006 to 2009. Hundreds of complaints were filed with a growing amount each year that they were on the market. The majority of these grievances involved the person having to undergo a second procedure to correct the pain and problems. These grievances concerned issues such as:

  • Mysterious tenderness or aching located close to or by the hip
  • Dislodging or moving around of the device
  • Failure of the device
  • Requirement of additional procedures to get a new device
